Power Rankings

June 18, 1999

Congratulations to the NSHL6 Neely Cup Champions!

What a season NSHL6 was! In this edition of the Power Rankings we compare how the teams performed at the end of the season to how the HLS2 simulator predicted they'd finish.

The ranking given is the playoff seed, so there is no number 17. (The sim's results are in brackets.)

If you still can't figure out how we decide to make up these rankings then read this sentence again.

TEAM PVS RECORD NSHL.com SAYS
1. Muffs 2. 57-17-6 What can we say about the Muffs that hasn't already been said? They are one of the best regular season teams ever in the NSHL. (55-20-5, 115 points)
2. Traders 3. 51-21-8 After spending most of NSHL6 in 3rd place in their division (how unusual!) the Traders made it all the way to the Neely Cup finals, again. More than ever, the road to the Neely Cup lies through the Traders. Since NSHL1, the team that beats the Traders eventually takes it all home. (51-23-6, 108 points)
3. Lizards 4. 47-27-6 The Lizzies rewrote the book on rebuilding a team in NSHL6. From doormats to contenders they just couldn't get out of the powerful Schultz Division. (50-22-8, 108 points)
4. SunDogs 1. 46-26-8 The SunDogs have quietly and consistently built up a strong hockey team. Their achilles heel? The Traders. (54-18-8, 116 points)
5. Spirit 6. 45-26-9 The Spirit have been one of the best teams with the best players for a long time. At one time, no regular Spirit player was rated under 80. Proof again that there's more to the HLS2 than points. (45-28-7, 97 points)
6. Loudmouths 11. 43-26-11 The Louds have come up short again, this time against a wall of Muff. The Muffs were hungrier. For Bar-B-Que, that is! (40-31-9, 89 points)
7. Stompers 5. 43-31-6 The Stompers have been there twice, winning once. This season, the first round was all there was to be. (48-26-6, 102 points)
8. Thieves 10. 42-30-8 The Thieves bowed out in the first round after finally shaking their Gretzky curse. In six seasons, this was the first that a Gretzky team saw post season action. The trade rebound worked for the Canucks in NSHL2 (Lemieux), but not for the Thieves in NSHL6. (41-32-7,89 points)
9. Booze Hounds 14. 43-32-5 The Boozers didn't stumble when they eliminated the Thieves in the first round. However, something happened on the way to play the Foo. (38-37-5, 81 points)
10. Foomanchu 9. 43-32-5 The Foo took the Semenko championship, but came up short against the Crunch in the Pepsi final. (42-33-5, 89 points)
11. Useless Twits 13. 42-33-5 The Twits quickly stepped away from the playoffs in their round one loss to the Louds. (39-36-5, 83 points)
12. Infantry 8. 41-32-7 The Infantry took the Muffs to seven games in round one. (42-32-6, 90 points)
DNQ! Eagles 7. 42-35-3 13th overall. The Eagles should've made the playoffs but got bumped out by a competative Semenko Division. We missed the traditional Spirit/Eagles playoff series! (44-33-3, 91 points)
13. Fat Guys 12. 40-37-3 The Fat Guys were swept away in the first round by the Crunch. (39-36-5, 83 points)
14. Crunch 15. 38-36-6 The Crunch took the Pepsi challenge and rode with it all the way to the Neely Cup finals. They were oh-so-close in NSHL5, losing to the Spirit in the conference final. This season had a most definately different result. (37-36-7, 81 points)
15. Ice Terrors 20. 32-40-8 The Terrors were the most under-rated of under dogs in any first round match up, seeding 13 places below the Traders. Ironically, these two teams would have met in a top-bottom play off format as well. They almost had the Traders making reservations for the golf course. (24-49-7, 55 points)
16. Thistles 17. 31-46-3 The Thistles should've missed the playoffs (see Eagles), but they made it to the second season losing in the 2nd round to the Crunch. (33-44-3, 69 points)
DNQ!Muskie Hunters 16. 30-42-8 The 18th overall Muskies missed the playoffs by 4 points due to a streaking Ice Terrors team. Consolation? They didn't have to play the Traders in the first round. (29-39-12, 70 points
DNQ! Blazers 21. 27-49-4 The Blazers finished 19th overall. (24-51-5)
DNQ! Icecats 22. 23-47-10 The Icecats finished 20th overall. (21-50-9)
DNQ! Blades 18. 22-52-6 The Blades finished 21st overall. (29-47-4)
DNQ! Psychosis 23. 22-54-4 The LC team finished 22nd overall. (21-57-2)
DNQ!Highlanders 19. 18-51-11 The Highlanders finished 23th overall. (24-48-8)
DNQ! Stranglers 24. 14-60-6 The Stranglers finished 24th overall. (16-58-6)
