Power Rankings

October 9, 1999

We turn this edition of the Power Rankings over to The Thief, under duress. If there ever was a good reason to outlaw green leotards...

Hi All,

The format I used to generate the Power Rankings was total points after each team reached 40 games, not how the stats look now. I figure the idea of a halfway point review is to see how you did during the first HALF of the season (makes sense). So here we go.

The "BEST DIVISION IN THE NSHL" thus far would have to be the O'Reilly Division. Teams from that division fill 3 of the top 4 spots in the Power Rankings. The Muffs, Loudmouths and Infantry all have a lock on a playoff spot. The best thing that could happen to any one of these teams is to win the division, breeze through the first round and watch the other two kill each other.

The "HARDEST DIVISION IN THE NSHL" is without a doubt, the Semenko Division. Only 5 points separate 1st from 4th and if playoffs were decided by the top 16 teams, every team in the division would be in. It will be a battle to the end and only GOD knows how it will finish and who will win it all.

The dubious distinction of "EASIEST DIVISION IN THE NSHL" is being duked-out by the Nystrom and Schultz Divisions. Only the outstanding play of the Thistles and Traders are keeping their division from losing face totally. Both the Thistles and Traders are running away with their divisions and should have an easy walk into the conference finals (MUST BE NICE!!!).

NOW! On to the rankings.

TEAM PVS RECORD NSHL.com SAYS
1. Muffs 2. 30-7-3 63 points. Nothing surprising here. Muffs have a life long reservation at the top of the NSHL.
2. Traders 1. 28-10-2 58 points. 1st in Division by a WHOPPING 23 points!!! Holding the Division pride solely on their shoulders. Going to walk into the conference finals without breaking a sweat.
3. Loudmouths 5. 27-10-3 57 points. Well ahead of last year's point total. The HOTTEST team in the NSHL!!!!
4. Infantry 3. 27-11-2 56 points. Infantry round out the 1-2-3 punch of the O'Reilly Div. Can R.B. lead them to the promised land?
5. Thistles 7. 24-12-4 52 points. Only 13 points needed to surpass last year's point total. Another team walking into the conference finals.
6. Thieves 6. 23-11-6 52 points. 1st in Semenko division.
7. Foomanchu 9. 22-11-7 51 points. 2nd in the Semenko division. 1 point out of 1st.
8. Eagles 8. 21-11-8 50 points. 3rd in the Semenko division. 2 points out of 1st.
9. Spirit 4. 22-15-3 47 points. 4th in the Semenko division. 5 points out of 1st.
10. Blades 13. 18-18-4 40 points. 10th overall but 5th in Semenko division. Out of playoffs if season ended today. Thems the breaks when you're in the toughest division on the planet.
11. Stompers 11. 18-20-2 38 points. In a dog fight for a playoff spot. I would be surprised if they didn't make it (Call it experience!!!)
12. Psychosis 12. 15-17-8 38 points. 18 points out of 3rd place and 16 points up on 5th. Safe bet to finish 4th in O'Reilly.
13. Fat Guys 17. 18-21-1 37 points. Fighting for a playoff spot in the Nystrom Div. If they could keep up their winning percentage against own division (.833) they might just pull it off.
14. Booze Hounds 14. 15-19-6 36 points. Another team that's top 16 but out of a playoff spot. Must be in the Semenko division!!
15. Stranglers 10. 15-20-5 35 points. Off-season acquisitions are paying off. They already have more points than all of last year. Could they make the playoffs and turn this into a comeback season for the record books? Time will tell.
16. Scorpions 19. 14-19-7 35 points. Can they hold on to second place? Will they collapse and miss the playoffs? Will the team name change for the 3rd time in 3 years? Who knows.
17. Lizards 15. 16-22-2 34 points. On pace to finish 32 points behind last years total and still in a playoff race. Go figure!!!!
18. Crunch 18. 14-21-5 33 points. Strong play of late and some good trades puts the Crunch back in the "Watch out for me!! You never know who the hell will win the cup" category.
19. Ice Terrors 16. 14-21-5 33 points. 1 of 4 sub .500 teams in the division fighting for a playoff spot. Good luck!!
20. Blazers 24. 13-23-4 30 points. Playing good hockey lately and charging up their division ladder. Bet on the Blazers to make it over the hump and into a playoff spot.
21. Buzzards 21. 8-25-7 23 points. Doing good with what they have and what they have isn't much.
22. Useless Twits 20. 10-28-2 22 points. What's up with the Twits? Out of the playoff picture and fighting the Buzzards for last in the O'Reilly. Good luck to the winner!
23. Highlanders 23. 8-26-6 22 points. Competing for last place year after year is probably easier than competing for first place?!?
24. SunDogs 22. 9-29-2 20 points. What are three possibilities that make a team go from really good to really bad in less that a year?
1) Unlucky
2) Playing only farmers
3) Pissed off Gord.
You choose.
